TSUM Art Foundation founded in May 2009 supports projects in the sphere of modern art, exhibits the works of leading modern Russian and foreign artists at the international exhibitions and fundamental art projects.
TSUM has repeatedly stood out as a modern exhibition space. The most prominent examples are the “American video art” project (May 2007) and Yoko Ono’s monographic exhibition “The Odyssey of Cockroach” (June 2007, special guest of 2 Moscow Biennale of Contemporary art) which took place at TSUM and became notable events in Russian cultural life.
In May 2008 a “China Forward!” exhibition was opened at TSUM, introducing more than 40 art objects. Especially for this project TSUM put together a unique collection of objects by best contemporary Chinese artists working in genres of photography, painting and sculpture: Zhang Huan, Ma Liuming, Zhong Biao, Chen Wenling, Gao Brothers.
In 2009 TSUM Art Foundation was one of the sponsors of the Russian pavilion on the Biennale of contemporary art in Venice. Along with speech of Alexander Avdeev, Minister of culture of Russian Federation, the Foundation’s program was introduced to the wide public. It includes development of Russian contemporary art, support of young and established artists, expanding Russian presence on the world art stage.
As part of the parallel program of the 53 Biennale in Venice in 2009 TSUM Art Foundation supported "SubTiziano" - the project of Alexander Ponomarev. This landscape installation showed a painted submarine that emerged on the surface in Venice’s Grand Canal, symbolically linking this day with the Titian’s epoch.
In September 2009 as part of the 3 Moscow Biennale of Contemporary art TSUM Art Foundation presented the innovative installation project of the artist and curator Oleg Kulik – “MOSCOW. TSUM”. This unique project performed as a Spatial Liturgy was highly appreciated by Russian and international cultural society, including Sam Keller, the ideologist of the Art Basel fair and Foundation Beyeler’s director, as well as by the representatives of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. It was due to the artist’s popularity as a well-known provocateur and rioter.
Continuing tradition of exhibiting the best examples of contemporary art TSUM Art Foundation presented at the end of May 2010 the project AFTERMOON by the classic of French conceptual art Bertrand Lavier. Being the participant of numerous important exhibitions and biennales, the follower of the ready-made concept and avanguard Bertrand Lavier presented the installations made of seemingly impossible combinations answering the main up-to-date question – what can be called the art? As a part of the Russia-France year 2010 the project became another step towards the integration of Russia to the world art scene.
