Small children not yet able to speak, and very old and sick people who have already lost their verbal abilities, desperately try to find understanding and establish contact with the surrounding world. These people use intuitive communicative apparatus not yet channeled into schemes and clichés, and they do it in the most direct and uninfluenced way: crying, gesturing, touching, grimacing. In these creative expressions it is easier to find the essence of what is happening and to reveal the lack or excess of communication.
Loss and recovery of the verbal and visual languages of communication are the theme and subject of Irina Nakhova’s new project, “(Strange) Primer.” (Strannaya Rodnaya Rech’). Within the evolving post-verbal visual world, where words play a less important role and where images and sound start to dominate, this investigation seems meaningful and valid.
