Although an optimist by nature, I suddenly realised there was little room for optimism in the world: mother nature is rebelling, crime and corruption surround us, art has lost its sense of identity (it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish art from crime and corruption) and religion offers no consolation, although grinning energetically through bared teeth. Of course you can hide away from the world with a book, close to nature.
But the scope of my reading matter is also somehow reduced, to Koestler's 'Darkness at Noon' and Merleau-Ponty's 'Humanism and Terror', ending with René Girard's 'The Scapegoat'. I should warn you – the optimism in the title of my project is not necessarily justified.
